An Australian mother is warning others after her 4-year-old daughter, Luca, suffered chemical burns and temporary blindness from biting a laundry detergent pod. The incident occurred while helping with chores when Luca bit into the colorful pod, causing it to burst in her face. Despite efforts to rinse her eyes, the damage required emergency hospital care, three surgeries, and a 16-day stay.
Luca underwent a rare amniotic membrane transplant and continues to recover, though her vision isn’t fully restored. Her mother, Jodi de Groot, is now urging parents to be cautious and pushing for clearer warnings on detergent packaging.
“These pods look like toys,” Jodi said. “One pod caused burns, blindness, and multiple surgeries.”
Manufacturer Unilever expressed sympathy and noted their packaging includes safety features, but Jodi insists more urgent, visible warnings are needed. Luca’s story highlights the hidden dangers of detergent pods and the need for greater awareness.
