“I’m dead in life”: Erika is 20 years old and requested euthanasia after being left quadriplegic by a bottle…See More

Erika Morales, a 20-year-old woman from Los Andres, Sotomayo, who became quadriplegic after a brutal attack at a Pasto bar when she was 17, has passed away following her request for euthanasia.

The attack occurred on August 2, 2021, when Erika was struck with a whiskey bottle in the bar’s restroom during an argument, causing severe spinal cord injury and multiple strokes. She remained unconscious for over a year and, despite regaining consciousness, was unable to move or breathe without assistance. Her family cared for her despite financial struggles, providing necessary medical supplies and support.

Erika’s final wish for euthanasia was granted on March 1, 2025, after the health authority approved the procedure on February 22. Her sister Tatiana Morales shared emotional messages on social media, expressing both grief and relief that Erika’s suffering had ended. Tatiana also spoke about the challenges she faced supporting her sister’s decision and fighting for her right to die with dignity, highlighting the family’s struggles with the medical system, including the refusal of her health provider, EPS Emssanar, to initially approve the surgery.

While social media named Glair Gómez and Leidy León as the alleged attackers, authorities have not confirmed these claims, and no official updates on the case have been released.

Erika became a symbol of the right to die with dignity after enduring years of physical and emotional pain, relying entirely on others for daily care. Her passing has sparked public reflection on her tragic story and the broader issues surrounding euthanasia and patient rights.
