Horrific hot air balloon incident kills eight people

8 Killed in Tragic Hot Air Balloon Fire in Brazil

A hot air balloon carrying 21 people caught fire midair in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina, killing eight passengers. The others, including the pilot, survived and were hospitalized.

Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency is investigating the incident, focusing on the balloon’s condition and crew. According to police officer Tiago Luiz Lemos, the pilot reported that a fire broke out in the basket, prompting him to lower the balloon and urge passengers to jump. Some managed to escape, but others couldn’t.

“The flames started to grow, and because of the weight, the balloon rose again before falling due to a loss of suspension,” said Lemos. Among the deceased, three were found holding one another.

Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello called the event a tragedy and assured full state support. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed condolences and offered federal assistance to survivors and local authorities.

The ride, operated by balloon company Sobrevoar, was scheduled to last 45 minutes and reach 3,280 feet. It cost $100 per person. Sobrevoar claimed the flight followed all safety guidelines and that the pilot acted swiftly, though the tragedy was unavoidable.

“Despite precautions and our experienced pilot’s efforts, we are devastated by the pain this tragedy has caused,” the company said in a statement.

Praia Grande, the site of the incident, is known for scenic views and is often called the “Brazilian Cappadocia,” attracting many ballooning tourists.

Authorities continue investigating what caused the fire and whether safety procedures were followed. The focus now is on supporting the survivors and families affected by this heartbreaking event.
