“Ghost Boy” woke up from coma after being trapped for 12 years

Few real-life miracles defy belief like the story of Martin Pistorius—the boy who vanished into a 12-year vegetative state, only to awaken fully aware of the world that had left him behind.

It began in 1988 when 12-year-old Martin came home from school with a sore throat. His health rapidly declined. Muscles wasted away, limbs curled, and soon, he fell into a coma.

Doctors diagnosed cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain but couldn’t explain his failure to recover. Within a year, they gave his parents a grim prognosis: “Your son has the brain function of a three-month-old. Take him home… until he dies.”

Refusing to give up, Martin’s father, Rodney, cared for him daily—dressing, bathing, feeding, and turning him every two hours at night to prevent bedsores. His mother, Joan, battled emotional exhaustion.

Miraculously, Martin’s mind began to awaken around age 14. Though conscious, he was trapped—unable to move or speak. “I was aware of everything, but I couldn’t control anything,” he later said.

No one noticed. Even his mother, in despair, once whispered, “I hope you die.” Martin heard every word. “I just wanted relief,” Joan later admitted.

Years passed until an observant aromatherapist, Virna van der Walt, noticed faint signs of awareness—tiny smiles and steady gazes—and encouraged further testing.

At the University of Pretoria, specialists confirmed Martin’s consciousness. His parents got him a computer with communication software, and after years of therapy, Martin learned to express himself using a voice device—like Stephen Hawking.

Today, Martin is a published author, married, and an inspiring symbol of resilience, proving that even in the darkest silence, the human spirit can endure.
