Man converted storage silo into a beautiful 2-bedroom home — see inside

A drive along Highway 50 toward Elmdale, then west, leads travelers into the quiet beauty of rural Kansas. Within about 90 minutes, the noise of everyday life fades into open skies, rustling leaves, and peaceful farmland.

In West Chase County, surrounded by soybean fields and a gentle creek valley, sits a unique getaway called the Owl’s Nest Silo House. The setting offers calm, privacy, and a true escape from city life.

The silo stands beside a handcrafted log cabin built in 2019. Designed as a cozy retreat, the cabin was originally meant for occasional weekend rentals, offering guests a rustic yet comfortable stay.

The project was led by Gerald Wiens, who initially expected limited interest. He planned to rent the cabin only a few weekends each month, similar to a small Airbnb operation.

Demand quickly exceeded expectations, especially during the pandemic. The Paw Print Cabin was booked for more than 180 nights in a single year, revealing a strong desire for peaceful rural escapes.

Nearby, an old silo in good condition inspired Gerald’s next idea. Rather than tearing it down, he imagined transforming it into a livable space, despite the design challenges of a circular structure.

After experimenting with sketches, models, and multiple floor plans, the concept became reality. The finished silo rises four stories high and reaches 45 feet, making it both striking and functional.

Inside, the silo opens into a circular living area designed for comfort. Plush leather chairs invite guests to relax, talk, or simply enjoy the quiet, turning an old farm structure into a one-of-a-kind retreat.
