When First Impressions Aren’t What They Seem

I met a guy on a dating app, and we clicked almost instantly. Our conversations were easy, full of humor, and he seemed genuinely kind from the start.

After weeks of messaging, we finally decided to meet. I felt excited but nervous, wondering if he’d be the same in person as he was online.

When I saw him, he looked just like his photos—put together, friendly, and approachable. Talking to him felt natural right away, which was reassuring.

But within minutes, something caught me off guard. His scent was extremely strong, almost overwhelming, and it distracted me more than I expected.

I tried to ignore it and stay present because everything else was going well. Still, it lingered enough to make it hard to fully relax.

As the date went on, I felt torn. I was enjoying his company, laughing and connecting, yet that one detail kept pulling my attention away.

By the end of the night, I didn’t want to leave with silent judgment. I gently brought it up, hoping not to make him uncomfortable.

He laughed and admitted he’d overdone it because he was nervous about smelling fresh. That changed everything—it wasn’t a flaw, just effort, and it reminded me how perspective can shift everything.
