Last McDonald’s burger sold in Iceland in 2009 still hasn’t got mould on it

Iceland’s last McDonald’s closed in 2009, and surprisingly, one of the last meals sold in the country remains intact. Displayed at Snotra House, a hostel in southern Iceland, the decade-old hamburger and fries still look surprisingly good. Hostel owner Siggi Sigurdur notes that there’s no mold, only the paper wrapping looks old.

The intriguing meal has become a tourist attraction, with a livestream on the hostel’s website drawing around 400,000 views regularly. Sigurdur told BBC News in 2019, “The old guy is still there, feeling quite well. It still looks quite good actually. It’s a fun thing, of course, but it makes you think about what you are eating.” Iceland lost its McDonald’s due to an economic collapse in 2008, which weakened the Icelandic króna, making imported produce too expensive for the outlets. Despite the absence of McDonald’s, Icelanders have alternative options like Metro.
