They received hate letters for being in love 50 years ago, but their interracial marriage is still going strong today.

Leslie Uggams: A Trailblazer in Entertainment and Love

Leslie Uggams, a Harlem-born actress and singer with a stellar seven-decade career, is best known for her roles in theater, film, and the Deadpool series. However, her personal life has been just as groundbreaking as her career.

In 1965, Uggams defied societal expectations by marrying Australian actor Grahame Pratt, a bold move during a time when interracial relationships faced significant prejudice. Their love story began at New York’s Professional Children’s School and blossomed during one of Leslie’s tours in Australia. Despite warnings from her family about the challenges of an interracial relationship, Leslie and Grahame pursued their love.

Leslie recalled receiving hate mail after their marriage, particularly during tours in the U.S., but noted that Grahame’s Australian background helped him integrate smoothly into her life. “He wasn’t self-conscious about our situation and fit right in with my friends,” Leslie shared.

The couple raised two daughters, Danielle and Justice, while navigating Leslie’s rising fame. By 1977, she earned an Emmy nomination for her role as Kizzy in Roots and continued to build an illustrious career with notable roles in Backstairs at the White House and All My Children.

Leslie also made her mark as a television host, earning a Daytime Emmy for the NBC game show Fantasy. Over the years, she appeared in popular shows like Family Guy, The Love Boat, and Magnum P.I.

Now, after 55 years of marriage and a granddaughter, Cassidy, Leslie and Grahame remain devoted. “We have fun together, but it’s not always sunshine and roses,” Leslie said of their enduring union.

Their love story stands as a testament to loyalty, resilience, and breaking barriers, inspiring generations to come.
