Tragic Midair Collision Near D.C. Claims Lives of Skaters and Soldiers

A devastating plane crash near Washington, D.C., has left no survivors after a passenger jet and a U.S. Army helicopter collided midair. Among the victims were figure skaters, coaches, and their families, shaking the skating community worldwide.

Authorities confirmed that 28 bodies have been recovered so far, including 27 from the plane and one from the Black Hawk helicopter. The collision occurred near Reagan National Airport during the jet’s approach in poor weather conditions. A massive explosion followed, with both aircraft plunging into the Potomac River.

U.S. Figure Skating confirmed that skaters and coaches returning from a training camp were on board. Among them were Russian-born former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who built a respected coaching career in the U.S. Their son, competitive skater Maxim Naumov, was reportedly also on the flight. Young skaters Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, along with their parents, were also among the victims.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the figure skating community,” said Doug Zeghibe, CEO of the Skating Club of Boston. “It will have long-reaching impacts.”

Loved ones and fans are mourning the loss of the talented and beloved figures. Shishkova and Naumov’s childhood coach, Ludmila Velikova, expressed her grief, calling them “talented and beautiful people” who were “like my children.”

As investigations continue, the world of figure skating is left mourning a tragedy that will be felt for years to come.
