The building, formerly known as the AT&T Long Lines Building, serves as a telephone interchange, but its lack of windows and secrecy have led to various theories, including that it’s a nuclear shelter or a surveillance post for the NSA. In 2023, a man who worked there as a steamfitter in the early 2000s shared his experiences, revealing that certain rooms were off-limits, and the crew discovered confidential documents in the basement about radiation attacks. The building is said to have enough resources to function independently for two weeks and is rumored to be able to withstand a nuclear blast. Despite wild theories, the building’s official use remains a telephone interchange.
