Claudia Cardinale: See the Italian Film Legend at 86

Claudia Cardinale’s career spans over six decades, making her a legendary figure in Italian and international cinema.

Born in Tunisia, she was discovered at 18 after winning the title of Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia. The victory led directly to her first film roles, setting her on a path to stardom.

Behind the glamour, her early years were marked by personal tragedy. At 18, she became pregnant after a violent assault. She kept her son’s identity a closely guarded secret for many years, even as her fame grew.

Her professional and personal life came under the strict control of producer and husband Franco Cristaldi. He managed her career decisions, appearances, and public image, leaving her with little personal freedom. During these years, she struggled with depression before ultimately leaving Cristaldi in 1975.

Cardinale built an extraordinary résumé with films such as Rocco and His BrothersThe LeopardThe Pink Panther, and Once Upon a Time in the West. Her screen presence combined elegance, strength, and emotional depth.

Often compared to Brigitte Bardot, Cardinale stood apart by refusing to appear nude on screen, believing in the power of suggestion over exposure. She resisted Hollywood’s constraints, prioritizing artistic integrity over the lure of global fame or wealth.

In later years, she shared her life with director Pasquale Squitieri until his death in 2017. She has two children — her son from her youth and a daughter with Squitieri.

Now 86, Cardinale lives in France in good health and continues her work as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for women’s rights. Her journey, defined by resilience, talent, and independence, remains an enduring source of inspiration for new generations.
