Woman Mistakes Deadly Illness For Perimenopause—Dies Suddenly

Laura Dawson, 44, mistook her symptoms—lethargy and bloating—for perimenopause. In reality, she had stage three bowel cancer. After collapsing from severe stomach pain, she was rushed to A\&E and underwent emergency surgery. A biopsy revealed the cancer diagnosis.

Laura’s husband, Ben, 49, said initial scans looked “promising” after six months of chemotherapy. But in September, they received the heartbreaking news: the cancer had returned and spread. Laura chose to stop treatment two months before her passing, wanting to spend quality time with her loved ones instead of enduring further suffering.

Thanks to support from St. Christopher’s Hospice in south-east London, Laura was able to remain at home with her family in comfort and dignity. She later moved into hospice care, where she died peacefully on June 29, with Ben by her side.

Laura found joy even in her final days, calling them “some of the happiest” of her life. “Cancer forced me to acknowledge death,” she said, “but since then, I’ve lived more fully than ever. That has been a gift.”

Ben praised the honesty they maintained with their sons, Jacob, 17, and Theo, 15. The family openly discussed the prognosis to help them emotionally prepare and build trust.

Laura left behind lasting memories—letters, mementos, and symbolic gifts like watches for her sons to wear on special days.

“She was generous, kind, and joyful,” Ben said. “She lived with grace, and even in dying, she gave us the gift of presence and love. We were lucky to have her.”
