I Was Charged for Every Little Thing at My In-Laws’ House – Am I Overreacting or Was This Totally Unacceptable?

I’ve always loved being a grandmother, so when my daughter-in-law, Jessica, asked me to babysit my grandson Luke for the weekend, I happily agreed. The weekend went smoothly, and I returned home expecting a quiet evening — until I saw a note from Jessica.

Inside was an itemized list charging me for things like snacks, diapers, using the TV, and even $20 for using the guest bathroom. I was stunned. I’d cared for Luke out of love, not expecting compensation, and felt deeply disrespected by being treated like a paying guest.

I sent a message expressing my hurt and made it clear I wouldn’t accept such treatment in the future. Jessica’s reply was a cold, brief apology. Since then, our relationship has felt strained.

Now I’m left wondering — am I overreacting, or was this truly out of line? I only ever wanted to help, but this left me feeling more like a burden than family.
