Damir Yusupov, the pilot hailed for his remarkable landing of a Ural Airlines passenger plane in a Russian cornfield after a bird strike caused both engines to fail, has opened up about the unforgettable ordeal. With 233 passengers onboard, Yusupov recounted his immediate focus on saving lives, expressing humility despite widespread praise for his heroic actions.
Reflecting on the incident, Yusupov modestly stated, “I did what I had to do…I saved the plane, the passengers, the crew. I think that was the only decision. I don’t think I’m a hero.” Nevertheless, his swift and composed response during the emergency situation was undeniably courageous.
The successful landing, likened to the iconic “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2009, drew attention to the incredible skill and composure exhibited by Yusupov, akin to Captain Chesley Sullenberger’s feat. Following the incident near Zhukovsky airport in Moscow, emergency officials reported 74 individuals seeking medical assistance, although the Health Ministry clarified that only 23 required hospitalization, with all but one discharged after treatment.
In recognition of their bravery, President Vladimir Putin conferred the title of Hero of Russia upon Yusupov and co-pilot Georgy Murzin, with the rest of the crew receiving the Order of Courage for their swift and efficient actions in ensuring passenger safety during the evacuation.
The flight, bound for Simferopol, Crimea, encountered a flock of sea gulls shortly after takeoff, resulting in the failure of both engines. Despite the harrowing situation, passengers were amazed by the plane’s intact condition following the emergency landing, capturing video footage on their mobile phones to share on social media.
Yusupov, boasting over 3,000 hours of flying experience, has been a valued member of Ural Airlines since 2013, earning the rank of captain just last year. Despite initially pursuing a career in law, Yusupov ultimately followed his father’s footsteps into aviation, enrolling in flight school at the age of 32.
Following the miraculous landing, Yusupov intends to take a well-deserved break from flying. “I’m currently on vacation, and I will rest while the crash investigation is carried out,” he shared, reflecting on the incident as a testament to his and his crew’s skill, bravery, and unwavering commitment to passenger safety.
