Missing 8-year-old found drowned after running away from school

On September 12, 2024, 8-year-old Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, a second grader at Bells Crossing Elementary School in Simpsonville, South Carolina, tragically drowned after running away from school. He was last seen around 11:10 a.m. near the playground before leaving school grounds. Despite being accompanied by staff and other students at the time, Lionel managed to flee, and staff members were unable to stop him.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office immediately launched a search operation, deploying scent-tracking dogs and urging the public not to interfere on foot to avoid disrupting the trail. Authorities also asked nearby residents to check security footage and their properties for any signs of the child. The sheriff’s office initially confirmed that Lionel was missing and later delivered heartbreaking news that his body had been recovered from a pond near Lenox Lake Drive, just a short distance from the school.

Search and rescue teams, including divers, worked through the day and discovered Lionel’s body shortly after 3:00 p.m. Victim coordinators were made available to support the grieving family during this tragic time. The sheriff’s office expressed deep sorrow over the outcome, and the entire community was left reeling from the devastating loss.

Lionel’s mother, Dalia Cervantes, a single mother of five, shared her grief publicly, stating that her son’s death was preventable and a result of negligence. She expressed both sorrow and frustration, thanking the community for their support while holding the school accountable.

The tragic incident raises serious questions about student safety and school oversight.
