Margaret had never felt lonelier. On her 80th birthday, she sat by the window, hoping for visitors, but no one came. Her children were too busy, her friends long gone. Just as she was about to turn off the lights and retreat to bed, the doorbell rang.
A courier stood there, holding a cake. Confused, she took it and read the words written in icing: “We know what you did.”
Her hands trembled. Who sent this? What did they know? A chill ran down her spine as memories she had buried decades ago resurfaced—things she thought no one would ever uncover.
A knock at the door startled her. Slowly, she walked over and peeked through the peephole. The darkness outside revealed nothing. But as she turned away, a voice whispered from the other side:
“Happy birthday, Margaret. Did you really think secrets stay buried forever?”
