My Sister Returned Her Foster Daughter After Having a Biological Son — I Had No Idea She’d Face Consequences So Soon

The family gathered a few states away from my sister Erin’s home to celebrate the arrival of her baby boy, Noah. I brought gifts for Lily, my goddaughter whom Erin had adopted two years earlier, eager to see both children. However, upon arrival, I noticed Lily’s toys and the garden we had planted together were gone. When I asked Erin about Lily, she shockingly said she had “given her back,” explaining she no longer wanted an adopted daughter now that she had a biological son.

Our parents were stunned, and I was heartbroken by Erin’s callousness. She dismissed Lily as “momentary,” saying she didn’t need her anymore. This betrayal cut deep; Lily had been a source of comfort for me after my miscarriages, and Erin’s decision felt cruel and thoughtless. Despite pleas, Erin showed no remorse, seeing Lily as disposable.

Suddenly, two Child Protective Services workers arrived, prompted by a neighbor’s report. They questioned Erin and her husband about their rushed decision to relinquish custody without proper planning or counseling, raising doubts about their parenting. Erin’s tears didn’t move me—I was too focused on Lily’s wellbeing.

With the help of my attorney, I found Lily placed in foster care, forced to endure instability once again. I fought to gain visitation and began the adoption process myself, determined to give her a loving, permanent home. It took time and patience, but eventually, Lily joined my family.

Now six years old, Lily still struggles with nightmares and fears of abandonment, but she’s healing. Despite Erin’s rejection, Lily became my entire world, and I am devoted to giving her the love she deserves.
