The Meaning Behind Shoes Strung Up On A Power Line

Although less common today, you’ve probably seen sneakers tied together and tossed over power lines. I used to think it was just a neighborhood prank, but there are several theories behind it.

One suggests it started with soldiers throwing their boots onto power lines after completing training or assignments. This may have inspired other interpretations, such as the unproven idea that gangs use it to mark territory. Some believe it stems from bullying, as seen in movies where kids have their shoes thrown out of reach.
