U.S. Figure Skater Shared Flight Photo Before Tragic D.C. Plane Crash
Sixteen-year-old U.S. figure skater Spencer Lane shared a photo from his flight before the tragic crash of American Airlines Flight 5342 near Washington, D.C.
Lane posted an image of the jet on the runway at Wichita Airport before takeoff, captioning it with the airport codes “ICT -> DCA.” In a heartfelt Instagram post, he also reflected on his recent achievement—qualifying for the National Development Camp—thanking his coaches and teammates for their support.
Tragedy struck on Wednesday night when the passenger plane collided with a U.S. Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport, crashing into the Potomac River. More than 300 emergency responders launched a search and rescue operation, recovering multiple bodies.
U.S. Figure Skating confirmed that several members of the skating community, including athletes, coaches, and family members, were on board, returning from the National Development Camp held alongside the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.
The International Skating Union also expressed its condolences, emphasizing the deep bonds within the figure skating community. The accident occurred just days after the conclusion of the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, where a Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held.
