Woman Facing Multiple Charges Takes Own Life in Jail Cell

Sheriff Jim Yon confirmed that deputies found Melissa Ketcham unresponsive in her jail cell during a routine check. Despite attempts to save her life, Ketcham was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Ketcham was awaiting trial on six counts of first-degree rape and other serious offenses, with allegations of years-long abuse involving hundreds of incidents. The victim, reportedly someone she knew, came forward in January 2020.

Denying the accusations, Ketcham had requested bail, which was denied earlier this month. She faced the possibility of decades in prison if convicted.

The incident highlights the mental toll of awaiting trial in high-stakes cases and raises questions about inmate monitoring and mental health support within the justice system.
