At the age of 21, during World War II, Eastwood survived a naval plane crash in the Pacific. He recalled, “I was catching a free ride from Seattle down to Almeda when the plane went down off Point Reyes, California. I found myself in the water, swimming miles towards the shore, thinking, ’21 is not as long as a person wants to live.'”
After hours of swimming through kelp beds, Eastwood reached the shore, climbed a bluff, and sent out a distress call. This experience proved invaluable when he directed the film “Sully: Miracle on the Hudson” in 2016. The movie depicted the heroic emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River.
