He bought an old picture from a flea market for only $2

Randy Guijarro, a telecommunications technician, discovered a valuable piece of history when he purchased a $2 four-by-five-inch tintype at a Fresno, California, antique shop in 2010. Little did he know that this seemingly insignificant find would turn out to be a multimillion-dollar photograph of Wild West outlaw Billy the Kid playing croquet with his gang, the Regulators. The image also features prominent members like Tom O’Folliard and Charlie Bowdre.

Guijarro, along with his wife Linda, spent years authenticating the photograph, which turned out to be only the second confirmed image of Billy the Kid. A National Geographic program, narrated by Kevin Costner, documented their forensic and historical journey, showcasing the highs and lows of their investigative work. The photograph, estimated to be worth $5 million, has been insured by Kagin’s Inc, a California-based numismatic firm, which is actively seeking a private buyer.

The Guijarros, both avid collectors with a penchant for adventure, are planning to use the unexpected windfall to fund future expeditions. Randy Guijarro, reflecting on the find, expressed his hope that it motivates others to explore trunks and attics, emphasizing the untapped potential for discovering lost treasures.

While the couple does not consider themselves hoarders, they plan to responsibly use the proceeds. Settling bills, assisting friends and family, and embarking on new treasure-hunting ventures are all part of their future plans. For Randy and Linda Guijarro, this discovery goes beyond monetary value; it represents the thrill of the hunt and the joy of unearthing forgotten pieces of history.
