In a heartbreaking incident that has left a community in mourning, an 11-year-old child tragically lost her life in an accident on July 19 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The sudden and devastating loss has shocked family, friends, and the local community as they struggle to come to grips with the untimely passing of such a young and vibrant soul.
Olivia Knighton, the 11-year-old daughter of late Major League Soccer goalkeeper Brad Knighton, died in a boat accident on July 19 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A girl, 11, who was “struck by a propeller and later died of her injuries,” was one of the nine individuals who fell overboard when the boat was “rocked by a large wake caused by another boat.”
In a brief letter that was circulated on social media, Brad Knighton wrote, “There are no words to explain the depth of our great loss and sorrow in this moment.
“Our family is still in shock over the sudden and tragic loss of our beautiful and brilliant daughter, Olivia, to an unfortunate boating accident yesterday,” he added. We are all still unable to comprehend how quickly her exquisite beauty and blazing light left us.
Knighton announced his retirement in January 2023, having played for the New England Revolution for 12 of his 16 seasons.
He stated, “Olivia adored soccer and the Revolution with all of her heart. “Our family has always sensed your support behind us during my work. We will need your prayers and support now more than ever.
A picture of Olivia Knighton was displayed on the jumbotron during the New England Revolution’s game as an homage to her life. “Olivia was a bright and shining light who was a beloved presence around the Revolution throughout her entire life, always bringing a warm smile and laugh to Gillette Stadium and our training facility when she would visit,” the group wrote.
Knighton left the game after a highly successful career in which he played 52 games and was first in goals against average, save percentage, and victory percentage. Knighton sent a heartfelt statement online in which he praised his family.
I’m delighted that my kids Olivia, Owen, and Brooks have been able to share in this trip. I had the courage and belief to realize a potential I had no idea existed because I knew you were there, supporting me every day, he wrote.
Peace be with you, Olivia.
Our thoughts are with the bereaved family.
