British actor Haydn Gwynne, renowned for her roles on television and stage, has passed away at the age of 66 due to cancer. Gwynne had a celebrated career, receiving Olivier and Tony award nominations for her performance as the dance teacher in “Billy Elliot the Musical” in London and New York, along with other Olivier nominations for her roles in various musical productions. She notably portrayed the sardonic assistant editor Alex Pates in Channel 4’s “Drop the Dead Donkey.”
Among those paying tribute to Gwynne was playwright Jack Thorne, who praised her as “the kindest, loveliest soul and a wonderful performer.” She also played memorable roles in “The Audience” alongside Helen Mirren and “The Way of the World” at the Donmar Warehouse, among others. Gwynne had been a versatile and beloved performer throughout her career, portraying regal and noble characters as well as comedic and dramatic roles. She is survived by her two sons and partner, Jason Phipps.
