Patricia Williams took a photo of her son, Redd, who was born with albinism, a condition he shares with his younger brother, Rockwell. When Redd was born, his white hair and blue eyes drew much excitement at the hospital, but Patricia didn’t initially realize the implications of his condition. Over time, Redd’s albinism became more apparent, leading to school bullying.
The family sought to raise awareness about albinism, especially after Rockwell’s photos were used to create memes. They decided to champion the cause to prevent bullying and increase understanding of this condition. The family faced challenges, including questions about their child’s appearance, as many people had limited knowledge about albinism.
Redd had surgery for strabismus and transitioned to a public school, and the family chose not to use an eye patch to avoid drawing attention. As Redd and Rockwell grew, they experienced less of the “differences” as their friends got to know them better. Patricia aims to dispel misconceptions about albinism, emphasizing that people with the condition usually have light blue eyes, not red.
