Alex Lewis, now 38, emerged from a life-threatening illness with a profound appreciation for life after losing his limbs and undergoing extensive facial reconstruction.
In November 2013, Alex dismissed his symptoms as “man flu,” but within five weeks, he was in a coma as his organs failed. He faced Strep A infection, toxic shock syndrome, septicaemia, and necrotising fasciitis, with just a three percent chance of survival.
After over six months in the hospital and 18 surgeries, Alex embarked on a challenging recovery journey. He became the first person ever to undergo a pioneering procedure to reconstruct his lips.
Describing his injuries as akin to those from a bomb explosion, Alex initially struggled to accept his new appearance but has since embraced his uniqueness.
His plastic surgeon, Alexandra Crick, used skin from his shoulder to reconstruct his lips. It took six surgeries, and over time, the grafts blended seamlessly with his cheeks and chin.
Alex advocates for amputees and emphasizes the need for improved aftercare and cost-effective prosthetic solutions. Despite challenges, he works with universities to shape the future of prosthetics, grateful for a second chance at life.
