Conahan, a former Pennsylvania judge involved in the notorious “kids for cash” scandal. Conahan, who was among 1,500 individuals granted sentence commutations by the president this week, played a central role in a scheme that shocked the nation, accepting kickbacks from private prisons in exchange for sentencing juveniles to detention facilities.
In addition to the commutations, Biden also issued 39 pardons to non-violent offenders. However, Conahan’s case has sparked widespread outrage due to the nature of his crimes, which exploited vulnerable youth and undermined the justice system.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, publicly criticized Biden’s decision regarding Conahan, stating at a recent event that the president was “absolutely wrong” in this particular case.
