Luke Thiull, a 13-year-old from Iowa, embarked on an extraordinary project—he built his own tiny house in his parents’ backyard for approximately $1,500 USD. While most teenagers are engrossed in smartphones and video games, Luke pursued a more “traditional” endeavor.

Sharing his journey on his YouTube channel, Luke explained how boredom sparked his desire to build a small house. After a year of fundraising, meticulous planning, and using roughly 75% recycled materials from his grandma’s house, he gathered the funds and materials needed.

With the help of a friend skilled in electrics, Luke installed electricity in exchange for clearing the friend’s garage. The tiny house measures about 89 square feet, sans plumbing, providing a minimalist retreat without a hefty mortgage.

Throughout his journey, Luke documented his progress on YouTube, sharing his motivations and experiences, garnering curiosity and support from viewers. His parents offered assistance but emphasized that Luke should fund most of the project himself.

The tiny house features a microwave, TV, loft bed, and even a backyard BBQ, providing Luke with a quiet space for homework and occasional overnight stays.
