Kidney Failure in Young People Is Rising: What You Should Know

A recent case of a young actress developing end-stage renal failure under age 30 has shocked many. Experts warn that kidney failure is increasingly affecting younger individuals.

One example is a 1994-born carpenter in Hanoi, Vietnam. Despite having no previous health issues, he began feeling persistently fatigued. A medical check revealed end-stage kidney failure. While doctors are trying to preserve his remaining kidney function, regular dialysis is likely in the future.

Another case involves a university sophomore in his early 20s. After collapsing unexpectedly, he was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with advanced renal failure. He admitted to poor habits like staying up late, eating fast food, and avoiding exercise.

In the past, kidney failure primarily affected older adults. Now, unhealthy lifestyles are causing a surge in younger patients. Doctors have identified two major risk factors:

– Poor diet: High protein intake can raise uric acid, contributing to gout and kidney stones, both of which damage the kidneys.

– Lack of exercise: Sedentary lifestyles contribute to weight gain and metabolic disorders—key triggers of kidney damage.

Most young patients only seek help when symptoms are severe and kidney damage is advanced. Early kidney disease is often silent and easily mistaken for other conditions like digestive issues or anemia.

Doctors stress the importance of routine health checks every six months, even for those who feel healthy. Early detection greatly improves outcomes.

To reduce kidney disease risk, adopt a healthy lifestyle: eat a balanced diet, control weight, and exercise regularly. Prevention and early diagnosis are key to protecting kidney health—especially for young adults.
