Riley was a single mother doing her best to navigate the complicated world of dating while raising her 8-year-old son, Roy. It wasn’t easy. At 32, Riley was used to juggling a lot. Since her ex-boyfriend left when he found out she was pregnant, she had been the sole caretaker of Roy. On the evening of the date, Riley stood in her living room, her heart heavy as she prepared Roy for a rare overnight stay at his friend Kyle’s house.

Roy didn’t want to go. “I want to stay with you,” he pleaded, clutching his favorite toy, his eyes wide and hopeful.Riley crouched down, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead, fighting the guilt twisting inside her. “Just for one night, sweetie. You’ll have fun with Kyle—movies, games, and snacks.
