Vacation Sink Safety Trick

Before leaving for vacation, most people remember to unplug appliances, lock up valuables, and shut off the water. But one area often overlooked is the sink—both in the kitchen and bathroom. Ignoring it can lead to musty odors, moisture buildup, or even insect infestations.

When a house sits empty, especially during warmer months, plumbing systems can dry out due to lack of use. This can allow sewer gases to creep in through the drains, creating unpleasant smells. The stagnant, damp environment can also attract pests like gnats, ants, or cockroaches through the pipes.

Fortunately, there’s a simple, free trick to prevent this: cover the drain with a paper towel and place an upside-down glass over it. This creates a barrier that helps block gases, insects, and odors.

Unlike standard sink stoppers—which can shift, warp, or lose their seal over time—this method is more reliable, especially for longer absences. The glass doesn’t need suction or a perfect fit, and it won’t move around easily.

Here’s how to prep your sink before you leave:

  1. Clean the sink thoroughly.
  2. Pour hot white vinegar down the drain to break down buildup.
  3. Let it sit for a few hours, then rinse with warm water.
  4. Rub a lemon wedge around the drain for a fresh scent.
  5. Dry the sink completely.
  6. Place a paper towel over the drain and cover it with an upside-down glass.

It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference. Returning home to a fresh-smelling, bug-free house sets the tone for a peaceful reentry after time away.

So next time you pack your bags, don’t forget the sink—it’s one chore that ensures a smoother homecoming.
