Divers exploring the Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize, a massive underwater sinkhole, made a disturbing discovery at its depths. The hole, located approximately 60 miles off Belize’s coast, descends over 400 feet into the ocean. Recent technological advancements allowed divers, including billionaire Richard Branson, to explore the depths. At the bottom, they found plastic debris, including a two-liter plastic bottle and a GoPro with holiday photos.
More shockingly, two bodies of missing divers were also discovered, and the team decided to leave them as a final resting place, notifying the Belize government. Using a submersible, the team explored further and found underwater caves with hanging stalactites, challenging scientists’ previous assumptions. Branson emphasized the discovery’s significance, stating that the Great Blue Hole’s complex cave system formed on dry land, serving as a stark reminder of the rapid and catastrophic effects of climate change, particularly rising sea levels over the past 10,000 years.
